In 1921, the states of New York and New Jersey received consent from Congress to form an interstate agency to develop and modernize the entire port district in order to improve commerce and trade. The port district centers around New York Harbor, and includes 1,500 square miles from both states.
Keeping the region moving by air, land, rail and sea, so that the people and businesses of continue to thrive, with engineering in their DNA, the New York New Jersey Port Authority is shaping the future of the region with groundbreaking yet practical facilities and systems built for the 21st century.
And the Port Authority Police Department is a vibrant portion of that history. Created in 1928 with 40 members selected to police the Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing, as the Port Authority facilities increased in number, so did the police force.
Today, numbering more than 2,100 men and women in uniform, the Port Authority Police Department is the largest transit police agency in the nation, overseeing the safety and security of the biggest transit hubs in the world.
